Texturing A Ceiling
If your ceiling is plain with a little color, you will find that it is quite boring. To give it a refreshing and new look, you could add a texture to the ceiling. Many people refrain from doing this because they feel that it is an expensive as well as difficult affair. Neither of these is true. It is not all that difficult or costly to texture your ceiling. The procedure for texturing your ceiling is detailed below.
Items Required
The items required for texturing your ceiling are drywall joint compound, a paintbrush, plastic sheeting or thick cloth, a stencil, a sponge, a stepladder, a wallpaper brush and a taping knife.
Texturing a Ceiling
• Remove all the existing furniture from the room whose ceiling is to be textured. If there are some furnishings or items that cannot be removed, cover them all up with a plastic sheet or thick cloth.
• Nobody would like to spoil the floor while the ceiling is being textured; hence, prior to the beginning of texturing, you must ensure that you also cover the flooring with a plastic sheet or thick cloth.
• It is not advisable to texture your ceiling if there is already existing wallpaper. Hence, remove all the wallpaper from the ceiling.
• The first step in texturing your ceiling is to edge the complete ceiling by applying a thin drywall joint compound layer. Do not apply more than a thickness of 1/8” layer of this compound. You should opt for a thicker coat if you require a texture that is rough.
• Now the actual job of texturing starts. To create patterns, you can use wallpaper brushes or paintbrushes that have become very old.
• You can also use sponges with which you can create the texture by swirling or stroking.
• If you are interested in having a design that has been created earlier, you should use a stencil.
• It is also possible to create patterns on the ceiling using a trowel that is straight-edged or a taping knife.
• The process of alternating compound application and texturing should be continued until you complete the full texturing.
