The Dangers and Mysteries of The East
May 28, 2009
The East is a place of intrigue and wonder for most people of the Western world. Stories about the area can be shrouded in mystery and mysticism. An Asian is most often cast as the wise man in movies; Master Yoda of “Star Wars” fame might have been Asian in descent, had he been human.
These common perceptions of Asians stem from a combination of elements. The culture of many Eastern nations can be very different from those in the West. Deep metaphysical overtones and metaphors permeate local doctrines, providing an air of wisdom.
Stunning nature and this air of the mystic makes the eastern half of the world a very popular and often considered vacation spot.
Travelers sometimes believe the eastern culture to be of higher caliber because of its inclusion of spiritual origins teachings. Some feel increasing disappointment with Western culture, and in the past 50 years areas like Thailand, China and Japan have become a way to escape the dull monotony of a more material ideology.
Though some seek out a more spiritual and natural feel in Eastern locales, there are real dangers lurking in the area as well. Disease and crime can seem off putting elements to contend with when planning a trip to the area. Vacationers should be careful, and take steps to avoid illness such as dysentery and cholera.
It is a good idea to stick to bottled water and avoid street food. Also try to travel in groups and avoid suspicious looking areas, so that you and your friends will be a less likely target for crime or violence. Some criminal elements believe that those Western citizens able to travel so far outside their own country must be wealthy.
Another thing to consider is bazaar shopping. While you might be able to find excellent bargains, be sure to inspect any merchandise you’re considering purchasing, lest you accidentally buy a shoddy product.
Furthermore, it’s wise to pay close attention to the news. Be on the lookout for any signs of political unrest that could lead to unexpected and unpleasant disruptions in travel plans, even to physical danger.
Though there may be danger, don’t let those concerns keep you from fully experiencing the wonder and excitement that the East has to offer.
