The Fear of Tearing
Every woman gets excited when she is pregnant. The thrill of feeling the baby kick for the first time or feeling their little feet press against you (although that can be a little bit uncomfortable at times) or even just feeling them roll and move inside you. It’s all gravy until you get near the end, it’s your first delivery and you have no idea what to expect.
There is an absolute fear in some women who find out that they may tear while giving birth. First of all, not all women tear during labor. It is more likely during the first birth but that still does not mean it will happen. If the baby is face up or in a strange position then the chances are increased.
For some women, massaging the perineum while pregnant with oil that is rich in vitamin E can make the area more pliable and stretchable. This can help to reduce the possibility of tearing. It is also important to listen to the doctor and breathe when they tell you to breathe so that you have better control over the entire birthing process. This can also help with less tearing.
There is however that rare occasion when the doctor will have to perform an episiotomy. This is when the doctor will need to cut an incision in your perineum so that the baby can fit through. You will receive a local anesthetic so that you will not feel a thing. This procedure will require a few dissolvable stitches.
If you have the fear of a burning sensation when you have to pee after this procedure, you can simply pour warm water down there while you are going to reduce any discomfort that you have. It generally takes up to 5 weeks for the incision to heal but the pain and discomfort do not usually take that long to disappear.
All in all, you are going to be exhausted from giving birth to your baby and that small cut will not make much of a difference in the end. Don’t worry and enjoy the act of giving birth.
