Tips On Applying Foundation

January 2, 2009

Applying foundation is basic to any makeup. If you have got your foundation right, you will end up looking great. You need to follow these simple instructions to apply foundation in the correct way.

Start with the right skin routine

Before you apply your foundation, you should make sure you have a right skin-care routine. If you do not know what it is, read on to find out. It basically includes cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturizing. You should follow this routine for great looking skin.

The first step is to cleanse. Do it with a mild soap free cleanser. Then use a toner and then exfoliate with a mask. Now, the exfoliating does not require to be done everyday. You can do it either once or twice a week. It simply scrapes off the outer skin layer or the dead skin in order to reveal healthy, beautiful skin inside. You need to do this because makeup will stick on the dead skin cells and give you a blotchy or cakey appearance.

Next thing to do is to moisturize your skin to prevent it from drying up. A good thing to do is use a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it. You can then apply a concealer on the problem areas. One thing to try is to apply concealer all over for a truly flawless skin appearance.

Applying foundation

Foundation comes as liquids, creams, cream to powder, sticks, mousse and more. You have to try them to know what suits you best. You need to look at your skin type as well as the season to choose the right type. For example, if your skin dries up in winter, use a foundation with oil base. If you have too oily skin, then go for the powder one.

You need to select the right shade of foundation also. The shade should closely match the shade of your skin in your face and neck. For this, sample the foundation on your jaw line. The right color is the one that vanishes in your skin. This way no one can tell where your foundation ends and neck begins.

Outward and downward strokes are best when applying foundation. You can use a cosmetic wedge or even your fingers. Although the wedges tend to soak up more foundation, they give a better finish than fingers.

Always take care when doing the area near the eyes. It is delicate, so you need to be careful.

Next, apply powder so that the foundation may set. You can skip this step if you are using a cream to powder foundation makeup. This type is good because it requires less touch-up during the day. You can whisk loose powder with a large fluffy powder brush or pat it on with a powder puff.

You can now work with colour on your face as your base is ready.
