Too Posh To Push?
December 30, 2008
Cesareans are most often looked down upon. However, sometimes they are the only option and are often life-saving. Here are examples of two women, who went through this method of giving birth.
In case of an emergency
Caroline Frostick, 31, had to have a Cesarean because her daughter was not in the right position. Things were going on fine for her, till her water broke. Then the doctor found that the baby was not coming because she was lying face down.
This way she was trying to push with her face instead of the crown of her head, making it difficult for her and painful for the mother. As a result, Caroline was taken into the operation theatre, to her relief. There the doctors performed a C-section and delivered the baby.
Caroline had not opted for it, however, it was an emergency. The baby was fine and so was she. It took sometime for her to get completely healed. The healing process was of course painful, lasting for about 6 months.
Elective
In case of Tamsin Burland, 36, her baby was breech and hence, the Cesarean. She had not planned on it either. However, in the 34th week of her pregnancy, her midwife found that the baby was breech. It was confirmed in the scans and hence, she had to go for an elective Cesarean.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, the baby and the mother were checked to see if the baby was still breech and if the mother was healthy enough to be operated upon. Everything was fine, so the operation was done. The baby was healthy and so was the mother. However, Tamsin still feels a little bit lost out because of having a Cesarean.
Reasons for a C-section
If the baby is in danger, then he is delivered through the abdomen. If labour is failing to progress, no other option remains.
If you had a previous Caesarean or if your previous delivery was tough, you will need one.
As in the case of Tamsin, if the baby is breech, Cesarean is the safest option.
If the mother fears giving birth, she can request a Cesarean. As in the case of Caroline, if the baby is not in the ideal birthing position, you will need a Cesarean.
Conditions like Pre-eclampsia and Placenta praevia require delivery through the abdomen.
