Pregnancy ComplicationsPregnancy is a joyful and exciting time for both expecting parents. It is a time when your body undergoes several physiological changes to adapt to the needs of the growing fetus.

Most women enjoy this period of their life because it is the beginning of a lifelong bond that they will share with their child. It is also a time when you need to look after yourself and follow your doctor’s instructions and advice strictly. This is because pregnancy also comes with its own share of risks and complications.

Even though most women have a happily uneventful pregnancy, there are many cases when complications and problems can endanger the life of the mother. In some cases, even the baby may be harmed. Nowadays, most complications are quickly diagnosed and treated. But expectant mothers must be aware of the signs and symptoms of possible complications that may harm them or their unborn baby. Here is a list of the most common complications that may affect women any time during the 9 month long gestation period.

6 Pregnancy Complications

Miscarriage

This is the most common danger that may end the pregnancy. The loss of the embryonic life within the first 4 ½ months of pregnancy is defined as a miscarriage. It usually occurs due to abnormal chromosome pairing in the embryo. Women may also miscarry because of heavy lifting, strenuous exercises etc.

Signs of a miscarriage include nagging pain in the abdominal or pelvic region, light to heavy bleeding, any other unusual discharge from the vagina etc. If you experience any or all of these symptoms, consult your obstetrician immediately. He/she will carry out a thorough examination to determine if or why the fetus is in danger.

Ectopic Pregnancy

In this type of pregnancy, the newly fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tubes and does not pass into the womb. This is a rare but dangerous complication. If it is not diagnosed in time, the embryo may keep growing in size till the tube ruptures. This is very dangerous for the mother and may even be fatal.

Pregnancy Diabetes

This complication may arise when the woman’s body is not able to produce adequate insulin to digest sugar and its various forms. In extreme cases, high blood sugar may lead to both, the mother and the fetus, going into diabetic shock. This is potentially fatal for the unborn child.

Preeclampsia

This complication has two symptoms; frequent elevated levels of blood pressure and presence of protein in the urine. This is a very common problem and all pregnant women undergo regular tests to safeguard against it. It can cause serious internal damage and may cause loss of fetal life.

Low Lying Placenta

This is known as Placenta Previa in medical terms. The nutrition providing sac blocks the opening of the cervix. Even if this problem develops, it tends to remedy itself within a month or two. But if it persists, a premature c-section may have to be performed to save the baby.

Weak Cervix

This problem occurs when the cervix is not able to bear the weight of the growing fetus. The cervical opening may soften and start opening prematurely. Doctors usually prescribe strict bed rest if this happens. The cervix may also be partially stitched to prevent it from opening before the baby is ready to be delivered.
