Treatment Of A Sprained Ankle
Ankles are one of the rather delicate joints in our body due to the enormous amount of strain and tension they withstand as the joining points of the body with the legs. This tension is mainly due to the body weight. Ankles can get sprained when running to catch a bus, skateboarding, ice skating or when engaged in other activities requiring vigorous action.
Sprained ankles need immediate care and attention to heal properly. These steps in ankle sprain first aid are listed below:
• The basic and immediate treatment for a sprained ankle is the application of ice. The period of ice application needs to be about 15 to 20 minutes and needs to be repeated several times a day. Do not overdo icing the ankle because this can add more insult to injury than do any good.
• Avoid binding or applying pressure on a sprained ankle due to draining away of fluid from the area. This in turn prolongs inflammation and pain of the injury.
• Avoid using the sprained ankle, this does wonders to the ankle and speeds up the heeling process. It is better not put any weight on your ankle till it heals.
• Rest ankle in a raised position by propping a support under it. Elevation of the ankle drains excess fluid away and prevents swelling.
• Never apply any form of heat to the injured ankle when swollen. Ice is the only treatment during this phase of the damage. Once the swelling of the sprained ankle has subsided however, you may use a little moist heat to ease the pain.
• Once the swelling and the pain subsides, you may begin to use the ankle. Do not put the full weight of your body as soon as it heals. Train it up gradually to stimulate the restoration of damaged tendons and ligaments, regular and steady increase in functions will be seen as the nerves activate in the sprained area of the ankle, improving your blood circulation and finally returning your ankle to full strength and functionally.
