Trimester Stages Of Pregnancy

By on April 13, 2012

PregnancyPregnancy is a magical time that only women are lucky enough to experience. Old wisdom suggests that the bond that is formed during the 9 months of gestation between the mother and baby is stronger than any other human relationship in the world. This is because the fetus depends solely on the mom for everything from nutrition to oxygen.

The transformation of the tiny fertilized egg into an embryo and then finally a fetus is nothing short of miraculous. From a tiny single cell organism, it grows and matures into a full-fledged human baby!

The stages of development of a fetus have a very predictable and set pattern. With the advent of technology, doctors and scientists are able to witness exactly how the fetus matures. Also the symptoms that you as an expectant mother experience change as the weeks and months progress.

The period of human pregnancy is divided into 3 parts or trimesters (each is roughly 3 months long). Here is a detailed description of each trimester and the changes your body and the fetus go through.

Various Stages Of Pregnancy

First Trimester

This trimester lasts from the first week to the twelfth. This is a very exciting time because this is when you will discover that you are carrying a baby. A home pregnancy test shows a positive result only after you miss your first period (it tests the level of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin in the urine).

During these initial months, most women experience severe nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and giddiness. Some women even lose a little weight because of excessive vomiting. The fertilized egg travels from the ovaries via the fallopian tubes and into the uterus. You may be able to see the embryo sac and the fetal heartbeat in the ultrasound after the 8th week. Most women have feelings of extreme fatigue and sleepiness. You should try and get as much rest as you can during this time.

Second Trimester

This trimester lasts from the thirteenth week to the twenty eighth. This is called the honeymoon period because the symptoms of morning sickness diminish in most cases. You will also start gaining weight gradually. The fetus starts showing a very clear human form when viewed through an ultrasound scan.

People will start noticing your little pregnant belly by the 16th or 17th week. Many women experience swelling in the hands and feet. The appetite also shows a marked improvement. You might also crave for certain foods. Ensure a healthy diet that includes all food groups. This is very essential for you and the fetus.

Third Trimester

This trimester lasts from the twenty ninth week to the 40th. You will no longer be able to fit into your pre-pregnancy outfits. The stomach becomes larger with every passing week. The fetus is now capable of surviving outside the womb in case of a premature delivery. All the major organs and senses develop by the 30th week.

You, as the mother, will feel the need to pass urine very frequently and see a dramatic increase in your appetite. Due to the increasing weight, you will start experiencing aches and pains in the lower back, shoulders and feet. This is a crucial time for the mental development of the baby. Make sure you take the recommended dosage of Folic acid on a regular basis. You will become impatient and restless to see your baby as the due date approaches.
