During pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, lot of hormonal changes takes place. In case of few women, there will be an increase in the level of hemoglobin A1C. With the increase in the level of this hemoglobin, the blood sugar also increases. Thus, during pregnancy, diabetes would set in.
What are the effects of diabetes during pregnancy?
Diabetes during pregnancy is not healthy for the growth of the child. In fact, higher blood sugar may result in miscarriage, still born child, birth defect and even neonatal death. The effect of higher sugar level on the child depends on various factors including the general health condition of the ‘would be’ mother.
Home Remedies:
During pregnancy, and particularly during the first trimester, blood sugar level needs to be within the normal limit. This is very much essential for the health of the baby. If the pregnant is taking any oral medicine to control the diabetes, she must inform the same to the physician or the gynecologist.
They may prescribe a different oral medicine or they may even change to insulin. The physician may change the insulin dosage depending on the blood sugar level. You need to carry out scrupulously proper regulation and monitoring of the blood sugar level.
Monitor the blood sugar level at least eight times a day. That speaks of how essential is maintaining the glucose level within the limits. The pregnant woman should be in constant contact with the physician and promptly inform him of any noticeable change in the sugar level, without any delay. Take all medicines under his strict supervision.
In case any pregnant has hypoglycemia or less sugar level, lesser than the permissible limits, then such situations also need to be treated properly.
According to standards set, the minimum blood sugar level is 70-100 mg before taking food and less than 140 mg two hours after taking meals. Apart from medicines, the woman should have strict control on the diet and take to walking and some physical exercises as advised by the physician.
Whether the pregnant is diabetic or not, it is always advisable that she must avoid unhealthy habits like drinking, smoking, taking caffeine and taking prenatal vitamins etc.
