Winter Beauty Care
July 27, 2009
Here comes winter! And along with colder weather come a few beauty nightmares, like chapped and painful lips, dry and splitting hair, and itchy, dry lips and skin.
It’s not the end of the world, though. There are ways to keep your lips soft, your hair shiny and your skin soft and supple during cold winter months.
It’s no secret that chapped lips can look unattractive, and even lipstick can’t conceal the cracks. However, chapped and cracked lips can be remedied in just a couple of days.
First, apply a generous helping of lip balm to your poor lips, and then use a soft toothbrush to gently brush away unsightly flakes. Once done, apply a final coat of lip balm. Don’t add lipstick, especially a matte! Lipsticks can dry out your lips, so avoid them unless they’re heavy on the moisturizer.
If you’re looking for a more natural remedy, try almond oil. It’s an excellent lip moisturizer, so put a little on your lips before bed. If your lips are really bad, add a little heated beeswax and some vitamin E oil to the almond.
Dry skin sometimes seems like winter’s best friend. Only use cold water when you splash your face in the winter months, as hot water depletes moisture in the skin. The chill splash will aid in your circulation and temporarily close your pores.
Do this twice a day and you’ll maintain a wonderful glow. It’s a good idea to switch to a gentle cream cleanser in winter, followed by an alcohol-free toner and thick moisturizer.
Apply the moisturizer, preferably one with collagen, urea or lactic acid, while your skin is still damp to help lock in the moisture and keep your skin soft. Scrub your skin weekly to remove the dead skin and better aid the moisturizer.
Hair falls victim to the cold just like lips and skin. Split ends and dry hair can creep up on you before you even realize it. Deep conditioning can fight back these winter hair ailments. If you want to try deep conditioning at home, put generous amounts of your favorite conditioner in your hair, then cover it with a shower cap.
During the day, let it sit for an hour or so before washing it out, but you could also leave it in overnight. If you don’t have that much time, try steaming your conditioner-laden hair and you can wash it out after only 30 minutes. Conditioner works best during winter, because oiled hair has to be steamed for the oil to penetrate.
Winter might be harsh, but your hair and skin doesn’t have to be.
